Chemical handling/Darkroom safety (Please note that this is a very rudimentary list for chemical handling and safety and is not intended as a definitive guide)


Chemicals should be handled with reasonable care


Use common sense-the goals is to keep chemicals off your body and preferably clothing


If you are pregnant, have allergies, asthma, etc you should contact your doctor before using photo chemistry


Know what kind of chemicals you are handling. Read all labels and information. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS's)


Avoid skin contact-Use rubber gloves, tongues.


Avoid chemicals in eyes (wear goggles). If you do, rinse for 15 minutes (don't rub) and get help


Avoid chemicals in mouth. No eating, drinking or smoking in the lab. Wash hands carefully before eating


Avoid inhaling chemicals


Clean up chemical spills promptly.


Be cautious when using acids. Add acid to water never water to acid.


Take extra precautions when using certain chemicals like acids, toners


Store chemicals out of reach of children


Dispose of chemicals properly. No fix down the drain-use silver recovery system


Use clean towels when working with chemistry


When handling, mixing, and using chemicals take your time, don't rush and be hasty


Use common sense, practice environmental safety/consciousness for yourself, others
